Carbon Monoxide Detectors

The American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) is an organization that has been developing, writing and updating standards for boat building and repair for over 50 years. These standards are followed by boat builders, repair yards, surveyors, dealerships, law firms, trade associations and equipment manufactures, just to name a few.

ABYC Standard A-24.7.1 – A carbon monoxide detection system shall be installed on all boats with an enclosed accommodation compartment….

The standard goes on and is fairly complex and detailed. However, the bottom line is that a CO detector is necessary for each accommodation space on your vessel, ie. galley, V-bunk and any other separate staterooms. I currently am a ABYC Certified Standards Technician and can research and apply the standards as I conduct surveys.
